Alted Opinion - October 2008

What would you do?

You're daughter's going through that 'teen phase', she's stopped communicating with you and started to form her own opinions in life... opinions that you don't share.

You're worried sick that she may be caught up in drugs, or any number of dangerous illegal activities. She's taken off from home, and you decide to rummage though her room for clues, or a window into her world.

You find her diary, and within a list of 16 male names and their ages. You can only assume that this is a list of men your daughter had slept with... you're daughter of only 15! What do you do?

Having two teenagers, boy AND girl, this is a fear every parent faces but, at that age, you must pick and choose your battles, and ask yourself if sex is the worst thing they can be doing. I adopt the "don't ask/don't tell" attitude and worry about drugs and booze.

Yeah you know if I had kid's I'd be snooping 24/7 lol... But I do commend your attitude towards privacy.

I guess I have more experience being the kid and can kind of see how my folks 'picked' their battles with me

I would not search through her room. My mother did and found and read my diary when I was 12 and I would not want my kid to feel that kind of invasion of privacy. She was cleaning, and she found it she said. Big deal, put it back then, don't read it. Children have their own character, you can't mould them to exactly the standard you want and dictate all their actions. If you suffocate them too much, it will make them want to get away all the more.
