Is this a good picture? Is it art?

September 8th 2008 03:09

Yes/No, and why? What makes it good/bad? Is it art, or just a happy snap, and if it's art then why? What makes an image art; does it become art when taken by a famed photographer... does that then mean that a photographers family photo book is also art?

Hey alt_ed,

Excellent question and something I have wondered myself in relation to books - what makes something literature? Can it not be literature if it primarily has commercial value? Can literature only be accessible to an 'informed' minority?

I am probably closer to answering my question than yours, this is a bit different.

Maybe it's art if there is an aesthetic motivation behind it? But then there is 'accidental' art where aesthetic value is recognised after the fact, but not purposefully created?

Beauty and/or stimulation, whether intended or perceived, by anyone, in their own subjectivity...

Bloody hell, I don't know. I'm just rambling like a twit, as usual. I wish I would go and do it on my own post though instead of distracting myself with everyone else's!

Great post!

BTW, I like the golf course one, but if that last one has any sort of Rorschach element, I may be in trouble.

Hey Michaelie,

Thanks for the comments.. Hmm, I'm going to have to think about the first one for a minute lol...

But the second, about the golf course- well actually, that's a shot from Toronto's CN Tower, of HtO Park (a new development along the waterfront).

As for the last picture... what do YOU see?

I think Art is subjective... People can get so technical sometimes, and rightly so I suppose, but sometimes they just need to let it go...

Oh. I did think it was a funny looking golf course.

The last one... you really don't want to know.

I reckon that I can pick up a tennis racket and play tennis but, I'm not going to win Wimbledon... next year
If you know what I mean.
Photography?
Must be more complicated for the heavyhitters than just pointing and shooting but, it's still photography
Tone, light, composition, subject matter, point of view, and more I'm sure.
I could hit a good shot every so often but, that doesn't win the French

All the pics have artistic aspects, but you can tell there was no artistic 'vision' behind them. The first one looks like what I do - clouds framed by man made stuff.

Hi alt_ed,

I always thought art was that which (1) reflects life, and in so doing (2) creates an emotional response in the person viewing it.

Of course both of these views will only be my opinion, but;

Picture (1) - evokes no emotion, although it does relfect an aspect of real life, although not the common view?

Picture (2) - Does both. It reflects real life and evokes the emotion of complete boredom - perhaps even with traces of celerbrating medicority?

Picture (3) - Reflects life through time in an abstract sense of the word? In me though it evokes little emotion except to reflect on my own passing of time/ age / old and new.

Picture (4) - Reflecting life through the lens of what the architect wanted you to see as a reflection of his reflection of life [you know, concrete dimishes nature to ever smaller little islands of refuge] ... *dizzy* would be the emotion, yet it speaks of worlds, continents, Islands ... *chuckle* Chaos and order?

Picture (5) - *LOL* Maybe reflects life of a fish tank against the back drop of the sea, for those on an LSD trip? Emotionally, it leaves me cold like a fish ...

I would not hang these on my wall, nor would I call them art, although technically they are by its definition I spose?

Give me the Mona Lisa any day.

Interesting question.

Lilla ...

Is it pleasing to the eye?
Does it make you think?
Whether it is post modernist or minimalist does it really matter? Life is Art.

Hi everyone... hmmm, so we're not really any closer at defining this are we?

Lara,
but sometimes they just need to let it go...
-- so if the viewer is satisfied is that enough?

Good response Norm.. now where's my racket?

Kleonaptra can you define artistic vision in this context? basically, these are all my own pictures... the 1st pic i took about 4 years ago, and this might sound weird but my intent was to snap a decent desktop background... all the rest however, are basically just 'happy snaps' from my travels... with the exception of #3, which is from a series i shot of the buildings surrounding Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal.

Life is art carl, here here!!

Thanks everyone for stopping by

I just mean in my opinion, I can 'feel' that you had no particular thought in mind while snapping. Like they all have merit as art, for sure, theres light play in all of them, interpretation and post modern interpretation, but to me, Im not sure what you MEANT to shoot. Im not sure what you're going for, in other words.

Thats usually the best art!

all the rest however, are basically just 'happy snaps' from my travels
