I killed a dog!

I did something horrible tonight, something so unsettling in fact that it’s made me nauseous to the bone… I killed a dog.
I was driving down my street, it was dark, bitumen wet, and rain falling heavily from the cold night sky above had inhibited my sight.
I was accelerating, speeding towards my destination, wanting nothing other than to escape the inhospitable conditions. With a deep, loud ‘THUD!’ the front wheels lost traction, the rear went into over steer and I slid towards the ditch.
Disoriented, hazard lights ablaze, I felt a cold went running down my arm, my face. A metallic ringing in my ears, and blurred vision I pushed my door ajar and slumped onto the ground.
Muffled tones emerged from the dark, people, voices. An elderly couple picked me from the muddy ground, and wrapped me with a thick itchy blanket.
I asked the man "what happened?"
He replied "you killed my dog."
Without prejudice they helped me, and I felt so awful, I just took the life of man's best friend.
